What is Islam ?
Islam is a religious system begun in the seventh century by Muhammad. Muslims follow the teachings of the Qur’an and strive to keep the Five Pillars.
What are the Five Pillars of Islam ?
The Five Pillars of Islam represent the duties of a Muslim. Like the Ten Commandments, they provide a spiritual foundation and function.
1. Shahada. It is a brief prayer proclaiming the oneness of God and faith in Islam.
2. Salat. It requires Muslims to pray five times a day toward Mecca
3. Zakat. Muslims are expected to give to the poor and sick
4. Sawm . is perhaps the most demanding of the Five Pillars. It requires that Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan.
5. Hajj. is the pilgrimage to Mecca which every Muslim is expected to make at least once. A pilgrimage is a journey to a sacred place or shrine

Muslims believe that there is only one God. The Arabic word for God is Allah.
